Program Description:
This program runs every other fall semester.

Target Majors/Eligibility:  As an interdisciplinary study group
Overview: Grounded in theories and philosophies of community-based education, this study group offers an interdisciplinary approach to questions of land, belonging, sovereignty, and sustainability. We work closely with local pueblos as we do the important work of historiography and learning about Indigenous experience and epistemology. 

Interdisciplinary courses provide intellectual and experiential rigor for students interested in:
•    Native American Studies
•    Public Health
•    Education
•    Anthropology and archaeology
•    Museum studies
•    Environmental Studies
•    American Studies

Located in the beautiful mountainous region of northern New Mexico, Oga Po’geh (White Shell Water Place), now referred to as Santa Fe,  has long been a crossroad of cultures. Originally the home of the people of the Taytsúgeh Oweengeh (Tesuque Pueblo), it is now New Mexico's state capital. With long and deep histories woven in to the water, the clay, and the air, the program will offer an introduction to this dynamic and unfolding place from an assortment of disciplinary and experiential perspectives.  

Most uniquely, the program has close connections with the Tesuque and Cochiti Pueblos, as well as the Santa Fe Indian School, where students, depending on their interests, will engage in community-based learning. Opportunities are vast, and students will have the chance to assist in programs such as early childhood education, elementary education, community healthcare, environmental management, sustainable farming, eldercare, or law. 

In addition to these experiences, students will take classes that focus on Indigenous cosmologies and epistemologies;  sustainability; and the utopian and dystopian imaginations and materialities of the desert 
(from Georgia O'Keeffe to Earthships to Los Alamos). 

Over the years, student responses to this semester-long study group indicate that it has often been a life-changing experience. Students report that they have developed new ways of thinking, formed life-long relationships, and discovered or confirmed career paths.
